Tonight I Have to Leave It.

I was supposed to see Beirut play (again) tonight, but there were a number of factors keeping me from going DESPITE really needing some good, live music. I saw them Monday night, though, so I had my “fix”. Although they played rather well (they are really great live, and as a band they’re pretty tight) the vibe of the crowd was just weird. Maybe because it was a Monday? Maybe because it was in a more solemn venue (but DMST did just fine)? Maybe because it took about two hours to get there from all the traffic? (The President was in town, and so was that dude who doesn’t believe the Holocaust happened or that Iran doesn’t have homosexuals like the United States does, and a truck got caught underneath a bridge and lane closures liekwhoa)

I also don’t know how to react to going to a show with someone any more. I’m so used to going by myself and playing by my own rules that it was weird, even though I love my sister’s company (our Dad drove us! Otherwise, I would have taken the train) So, it was just a weird night and I was moody and I’m STILL moody, but like I said, there were factors. I just couldn’t deal. Sorry, Beirut. You still got my money for the ticket, though. It was just like I was there.

Gloria Steinem was in town (New Haven) today, and I missed it because I was at work. I wouldn’t have known about it if my coworker hadn’t mentioned it AND if another coworker hadn’t made a big deal about feminism being a dead cause and “special interest groups” — to which I added, “If half the population is a special interest group” and shut him up. But no, I was too busy shifting our entire collection of Connecticut law books and reports and stuff. It’s the one thing I don’t like about working in the library — shifting — alone. In any case, I left work just as the speech ended and I saw all the men and women coming out of the church on the green and they were most likely discussing what she talked about and I was upset that I was fussing over books and hadn’t asked to leave early. But, no, we have to flip around the shelves’ contents and I still have my daily tasks to worry about and the last week or so has been kinda unnerving because it’s been “Oh, and can you go to every library in New Haven until you find yesterday’s New York Times? I need a copy of the obituary page because the attorney is such a diva that they can’t just have a printout from the internet and they won’t buy a copy of the page from the Times because they are too cheap” and “Can you staple this for me?” Sometimes it gets out of control with the details, but I do it, and I am persistent and I don’t even complain (until it gets out of control and then I complain about it where they can’t hear). And I’m sick, and I really hate being sick at work because I just don’t feel like doing ANYTHING and they’re pushing me a bit too much when I can’t breathe. I also don’t like complaining about work because it’s more LJ than it is my-new-blog but there’s no escaping it, so sorry!

Things that are keeping me sane, however:

Scrabulous - If you are on facebook, you really need to add this application. If you love scrabble, and if you want to play like, a million games with me you can, because I will. I am addicted and I’m so glad there’s someone to play with me at 2 a.m. when I don’t want to go to bed yet.

Virginia Woolf, The Pargiters - Her essays are brilliant, her fiction…. brilliant, but sometimes only digestible in small bits. Perfect solution! And I know you should not judge a book by it’s cover, but I love the A Harvest/HBJ book covers for her works.

The Cure - I’ve loved them since middle school and they might just be the best or the worst band in the world — I haven’t made up my mind yet. I think that’s why I like them so much.

Cold Case Files - NOT to be confused with the drama series Cold Case (because that is HORRIBLE). I think I watched four episodes in a row, once. Usually, I watch this when I get home from work. I love when they get the bad guys, even after all that time. Chilling stories. They did a great documentary about the Green River killer, too.

And last but not least, Google reader. I loves it.
